The size of the nutraceuticals market varies wildly depending on its definition. Datamonitor Americas, New York, puts the total U.S. nutraceuticals market at $16.7 billion and the functional foods sector at $8.9 billion for 1996, says Tara Rummell, director of public relations. The Nutrition Business Journal, San Diego, Calif., weighs in with $86 billion for the U.S. nutraceutical market, of which 16.6% is functional foods, 12.1% supplements and less than 1% medical foods, says Tom Aarts, executive editor. Stephen DeFelice, M.D., who coined the term "nutraceutical," pegs the potential nutraceuticals market at $250 billion.

With the lack of clear category definitions, it's hard to argue that any of these estimates are wrong. Nonetheless, the figures dangle like carrots on a stick, tantalizing those responsible for company growth and bottom line revenue.
