Knowledge-based enterprises (
KBEs) are organizations that generate wealth as the direct product of knowledge. For these organizations, knowledge and information - not just scientific knowledge, but news, advice, entertainment, and communication - have become their primary raw materials and their most important products and services. Quite simply, knowledge is what they buy and sell. It is easy to envision
consultancies, ad agencies, universities, and public relations firms as examples of
KBEs. What is not immediately obvious is the extent to which every enterprise has been increasing its focus on knowledge as its emerging
source of wealth. The definition of a
KBE must then be seen as one of degree - the degree to which wealth is created directly as the product of knowledge within each organization. That is, every organization is a
KBE … to a degree.
